Series: Rules and Counterrules for Botany and Other Good Things

Rules and Counter-Rules for Botany and Other Good Things

Guidance from the plant world

Okay, here’s how it goes.
The second rule of botany is
“if you don’t know what it is, you get to make it up.”

The first rule of botany,
more widely known, is “if no one knows,
you get to name it.”

You’re on your own now.

"If it smells bad, don't eat it."

G.L. Larsen, Portland, Oregon

The rules of botany . . .

If... no one knows the name
.. you get to name it.....

If... you don't know it's name
.. you get to make it up.

If... it tastes bad
.. spit it out and don't do it again.

Just because it's green
.. it may not be good for you.

Just because... you've eaten it before
.. you and it may still not agree.

Just because... chipmunks and squirrels eat it
.. doesn't mean it's good for you.

If... and just because...
.. may be the rules of thumb........
.... so... lets honor our opposables.
