Reading the Signs

reading the signs

the book says water
covers seventy percent
of the earth - but here

in the Wallowas,

you’ll find only
a dime’s worth
on top of the dust.

as for the rest,

mysterious underground
byways take it all

somewhere – but

where they go, and

where they rise again -
you don’t get to know.
keep reading the signs.
