Flood Warning Series (Segues)

A mid-winter melting...

My icicles dripped all day,
.. all night and have now disappeared.
My roof is still dripping
.. signaling increasing water content

The deer hoof-prints all
.. over my front yard are showing
..... green grass and muddy soil
My sidewalk is one long puddle.

Scenting the air as I step outside
.. there are traces of guava and pineapple
..... wafting on the breeze
and freshly uncovered stock yards

Ahhh... but my dogs' bone yard
.. reveals treasures well loved and cleaned,
..... suitable now for salvage and carving,
small treasures of timing and patience

Isn't there a line from some place
.. about one man's flood warning,
..... becoming another man's measure.
Perhaps it's time again to pick rose hips.

the river is riz

it’s midwinter melt and
..........your foundation eases on down
..........the mud slides aside
with a sigh you can hear
if you don't want to
drips fall pretty frequently
with more to follow
don’t look now, but one corner
..........of the old place is now
..........lower than before
there is a plague of icicles
upon your house!
best go make amends
before the next snowfall

night melt

what happens when
the snow goes off
is just for you, though
you may miss it
.....the bells of the wind
.....the drum strike of ice
.....crashing to the ground
.....yet again, the moan
the stars make
at midnight watching
each little sorrow
pound the silence - and
over there, a rush
.....of might be or could be
.....but mostly, it all goes on
.....unseen, unheard
.....rushing down the river
as it rises in the dark

Flood warnings

It used to be colder here,.
.. the ice flows perched on the high spots said,
as they watched their brethern
.. melt and drift, swirling away.

Then... the warnings came along
.. with rain in the offing, for days on end
and the rivers are rising faster
.. than the melting is shrinking these flows.

Soon, now... there will be an offing,
.. as the drift builds on this dam of debris
and these swirling cakes will join the flow,
.. to scour beds and frozen fish from the bottom.

flood warning

I forgot: sometimes
the river will come
calling without calling
ahead first. The gauges
all say be prepared.
Above all, hold on
to your goods and
goodies. It could be
a wet ride: if you're unlucky
there may be leaks.
Be ready to find
the high ground: stay
there, or take a ride
out of town. Passage
might even be for free.
